At this time of year we all turn our attention to Christmas shopping, the office party, and having fun! All ideas of eating healthy go out of the window as we stuff our faces because we have an excuse – It’s Christmas!
We almost take it for granted that we’ll gain a few pounds over the festive period and justify it by telling ourselves we’ll be good from January 1st.
It doesn’t always work out that way though and unfortunately each year we get fatter and fatter.
Did you know that the average person will gain around five pounds over Christmas and New Year from over-eating and excessive drinking? As well as the ridiculous amount of food we all consume the average person will sink the equivalent of 18 pints of beer, 8 bottles of wine, a bottle of spirits and a glass of sherry!
Weight gain and Christmas do seem to go hand in hand but it doesn’t have to be that way this year… You can decide not to fall into that trap and not gain any weight at all.
Here are a few helpful tips to keep the bulge at bay during this testing time!
1. Fall out with a few friends now!
OK maybe you don’t have to be this extreme but being popular definitely isn’t good for your waist line. Being invited to a lot of parties means a lot of eating, a lot of drinking and consequently a lot of calories. If you are Miss Popular then be selective or try to schedule your parties a few days apart if you can. At a minimum give yourself a day of over eating and drinking every other day to allow your body time to recover.
2. If you don’t like them, don’t go!
It may sound simple but we all feel obliged to attend certain events, but this year put yourself first. Going to a party where you don’t actually like the people there, is an easy way to pile on the pounds. Boredom is one of the biggest causes of over-eating and drinking. If in doubt – Blow them out!
3. Ditch the diet!
Remember that this time of year is a time of joy, love and having fun. It’s not a time to be on a diet and be miserable. Besides the fact that diets don’t work they also make you miserable! Appreciate the delicious food on offer, choose wisely, take your time eating, enjoy each bite and stop when you feel full. Sensible eating is a skill that most people don’t use.
Hosting a party over the Christmas period is hard work. People spend so much time preparing delicious food and they want to make sure we eat it – every last crumb of it! I know they only do it out of kindness but be kind to yourself – You DON’T NEED that second helping!
Do not feel guilty about upsetting the host, they may only be trying to spread some love but she’s also helping to spread your love handles! If you’re the host then remember this as well and BACK OFF!
4. Find time to exercise
You don’t have to go straight to the gym on Boxing day morning or plan a New Years day marathon now but you should try to incorporate some activity into the Christmas period.
You could go for a walk with your loved ones, find the time to stretch or do some yoga or maybe try out that workout dvd you got in your stocking?! Whatever it is do something, the secret to exercise is finding the time and making it part of your lifestyle. If you create these good habits you will succeed.
Enjoy Christmas, spend it with people you love, have fun but do something different this year by not over –eating. Don’t feel guilty on January 1st – feel excited that you’re 5 pounds lighter than you probably would have been and looking a lot better than your fat friends!
